Esperanza Ochoa is a Mathematics Education Ph.D. Candidate in the joint Mathematics and Science Doctorate Program at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Her research thesis is focused on parental involvement in mathematics education. She is part of the SDSU Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE). Under her advisor, William Zahner, she has researched bilingual mathematics education, multicase research. Esperanza has experience teaching mathematics at the high school level and mathematics education courses at the undergraduate level. 

Since 2016, Esperanza has participated in the Coherence Development Research Institute (CDRI) as a Math Education Researcher under Dr. Sona Arbab. CDRI aims to generate knowledge to assist young people in a few cities throughout California to live a coherent life. CDRI uses a participatory methodology to engage youth and families to become active agents in their communities, paying particular attention to language and concepts related to coherence. Esperanza created neighborhood weekly tutoring sessions (both in local middle schools and other neighborhood facilities), organizing and participating in planning and reflection spaces about mathematics education for 5-12 students. She also organizes summer mathematics camps to engage the mathematical capability of young people in marginalized communities in the San Diego and East Bay areas.
